[Feb 12, 2010]Supporting the People of Haiti
The recent earthquake that struck the capital city of Haiti is a disaster on a scale beyond conception. Recent estimates put the number of lives lost at 170,000 with over 245,000 buildings destroyed. Clearing the damage will take weeks - rebuilding, years. Engineers for a Sustainable World recognizes that at this point, what it is needed most are basic supplies and medical expertise. To this end, we encourage our members and anyone who is looking to help to support the efforts of Partners in Health. There are many organizations working in the field who could use your donation. We support PIH because they have been there for 20 years and are well established and efficient. In addition, they are very familiar with local cultural values and know how to provide modern medicine while avoiding religious or cultural conflicts.

We are pleased to announce five new members on the ESW National Team. Four are former chapter presidents who supported ESW over the summer and will be helping to run operations at the national level. We believe it is highly beneficial to have an organization whose primary membership is students run in part by student leaders. The five new members are: Robert Best, Alexander Dale, Christopher Llop, Kalpana Pathak and Vicky Tian -- read about them and their duties on the National Team page!
We also wish to publicly recognize the efforts of incoming and outgoing chapter presidents Ben Runkle (ESW-UB), Heather Bischel (ESW-Stanford), Dan Snitzer (ESW-UBuffalo), Akta Patel (ESW-Cornell) and Chris Thai (ESW-U Pitt) for their help and support during our summer restructuring.
