Overview
The 2005 Engineers for a Sustainable World (ESW) National Conference will be held on the campus of the University of Texas at Austin October 5-9, 2005. Hundreds of speakers will present talks, sessions, and workshops on issues of sustainability in relation to the four conference tracks of environment, business, technology, and education. Confirmed keynote speakers include Hunter Lovins, Sergio Palleroni, Walter Weber, Jr., Akhtar Badshah, Albina Ruiz, and Solange Montillaud-Joyel.
Sustainability As Security
The theme for the 2005 conference, "Sustainability as Security: Engaging Education, Business, and Technology", reflects the growing concern for global food, air, water, agricultural, land, and energy security. The conference aims to move beyond a simplistic political or military connotation to promote the idea that global environmental security is something that affects all people, regardless of borders, culture, or nationality. Engaging Education, Business, and Technology
The future depends on our ability to sustain the environment in which we live, requiring engineers to think creatively, communicate effectively, and cooperate with local and global partners in education, business, and technology. Whether they come from private, government, nonprofit organizations or academia, engineers and their collaborators hold the key to a more secure world.
Involving the Local Community
In appreciation of the Austin and the University of Texas community, and in order to more actively involve community members who may not have the time or resources to attend the entirety of the conference, two keynote addresses will be open to the general public on a space-limited basis. Hunter Lovins will speak at the LBJ Auditorium on the UT Austin campus on Friday, October 7th at 7:00 pm. Walter Weber, Jr. will speak at the Texas Union Ballroom on the UT Austin campus on Saturday, October 8th at 8:00 am.
