Dr. E. Daniel Hirleman
- Acting Executive Director
Dr. E. Daniel Hirleman, who also chairs the Advisory Board of Engineers for a Sustainable World (ESW), will be serving as the Acting Executive Director of ESW starting July 1, 2011. Also starting July 1st, the new fiscal and physical home for ESW will be the University of California, Merced. By moving back to a university campus, ESW will strengthen its ties to the engineering education community and its programming in the engineering education space. Look for exciting new initiatives in the months ahead!
Dr. E. Daniel Hirleman joined UC Merced as dean of the School of Engineering in 2010. He received the BSME with Highest Distinction, the MSME, and the Ph.D. from Purdue University, following which he joined the Arizona State University faculty in Mech/Aero Engineering. He eventually served in administrative positions culminating in Associate Dean for Research at ASU. In 1999, he returned to Purdue as the William E. and Florence E. Perry Head of ME. Dr. Hirleman received the Pi Tau Sigma Award for Teaching Excellence and the College of Engineering Award for Significant Accomplishment in Research at ASU. He has received the International Network for Engineering Education and Research (INEER) Achievement Award in 2006, the Hon. George Brown Award for International Scientific Cooperation from the U.S. Civilian Research & Development Foundation (CRDF) in 2008, and the 2009 Charles Russ Richards Memorial Award from Pi Tau Sigma/ASME. In addition to chairing the ESW Advisory Board, he has chaired the International Congress on Optical Particle Sizing, served as Topical Editor for Applied Optics, and is a Fellow of ASME. His research involves optical sensors for surface characterization, semiconductor manufacturing, particle and flow diagnostics, bio-hazard detection, food safety, as well as global engineering education.

Rosalina Aranda
- Office Manager
As Office Manager, Rosalina will be responsible for key aspects of ESW's operations and administrative leadership. In this position, Rosalina will play a key role in managing ESW's member relations, new chapter development, marketing/PR, as well as office administration.
Rosalina has worked for UC Merced since its opening back in 2005. She helped in managing the Engineering Projects in Community Service (EPICS) program at UC Merced until 2010. Prior to her arrival to UC Merced, she worked for the non-profit organization, Society for the Advancement of Chicano/Latinos and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS) in Santa Cruz, CA. She worked for SACNAS as the student program manager and providing science students the opportunity to advance their educational career. Currently she is the administrative manager for the Center for Information Technology Research in the Interest of Society (CITRIS) at UC Merced. Rosalina enjoys spending time with her family in many outdoor activities.

Alexander Dale
- Director of Community
Alex is in the position of Director of Community, after two years as Director of Communications & Technology. In this capacity, Alex is responsible for encouraging conversation in our digital community and helping chapters share project information. Alex is also active in helping with some education-related projects, and planning new projects.
Alex is the former president of the University of Pittsburgh’s ESW chapter, and has been involved in spearheading connectivity for the entire Pitt environmental community. Alex has his B.S. in Engineering Physics from Pitt, and is now working towards his PhD in the Civil Engineering department with Pitt's Sustainability and Green Design group. Outside of ESW, he is involved with Pitt's other environmental groups, the Honors College, and the TEDx project. In between working on random ideas and projects, Alex enjoys video games, cooking, and coming up with new random ideas to work on.

Rob Best
- Director of Education and Projects
In his position as Director of Education and Projects, Rob is responsible for expanding ESW's existing educational and national programming, administering the webinar series, and managing the existing corporate and chapter project collaborations.
Rob received his B.S. in Engineering from Harvey Mudd College, where he also served as the school's ESW Chapter President and led several projects. At HMC, he also held office as the President of the school's chapter of Tau Beta Pi. In 2009-2010, he served on the National Team as the Director of Education and Outreach. After spending the 2010-2011 academic year on a Thomas J. Watson Fellowship studying sustainable cities and buildings in five nations, Rob is now working toward his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Civil and Environmental Engineering from Stanford University in the Sustainable Design and Construction Group with support from the National Science Foundation. In his free time, Rob is an avid hiker and camper and also enjoys reading, doing sports, and playing music, especially the saxophone.

Johnny Sompholphardy
- Director of Chapter Relations- West
In his position as Director of Chapter Relations, Johnny is in charge of connecting student chapter leaders to increase collaboration between/among our chapters, ensure that ESW National is providing value to the local chapters, and provide overall chapter relations support and communications.
By 2011, Johnny will have served two years as president of the University of Texas at Austin’s ESW chapter. He is currently pursuing a B.S. in Chemical Engineering, with emphasis in Environmental Engineering, and a minor in Biology. In the past, he co-chaired the Second Annual Electronic Waste Drive and in the future, he will be playing an integral role in founding the UT Service Scholars Program. When time permits, Johnny enjoys the spoken word, playing basketball, and listening to music.

Alexandre David
- Director of Chapter Relations- East
In his position as Director of Chapter Relations East, Alex is in charge of connecting student chapter leaders to increase collaborartion between/among our chapters, ensure that ESW National is providing value to the local chapters, and provide overall chapter relations support and communications.
Alex is currently pursuing a major in Business with a minor in Environmental Engineering specializing in green technology at the University of Rochester. He lead his ESW chapter for a year and a half, has taught a freshmen seminar on sustainability and leadership, founded the first sustainability housing option on his campus, organized various sustainability projects and worked for an Environmental Electronics company. When not overrun with work he tries to spend his time with friends, in the dojo doing karate or cooking and baking.
