Prior to her September 2008 appointment as Executive Director of Engineers for a Sustainable World, Julie served as Co-Founder and Managing Director of Geneva-Cathay Holdings Corp., and held management positions in strategy, business development, marketing and operations at several Fortune 100 companies.
Julie holds a B.S. in Industrial Engineering from Columbia University, an MBA from the Harvard Business School, and an M.S. in Real Estate Development from Columbia University's Graduate School of Architecture Planning and Preservation. She served as a Fellow of the Deming Center at the Columbia School of Business, and was named a regional finalist for the 2007-2008 White House Fellowship Program.
In the non-profit sector, Julie has been active in children’s issues, her church and Habitat for Humanity. She presently sits on the board of the Alameda Point Collaborative. In her spare time, she enjoys international travel, tennis, golf and classical music.
As the Director of Education & Projects, Jeremy is in charge of expanding the ESW educational resource center and administering the monthly ESW sustainability webinars. He is also responsible for tracking ongoing ESW projects and for encouraging the formation of new projects through the ESW sustainability project fund.
Jeremy is currently working towards his PhD in the Environmental Engineering and Science program at the University of Iowa. He has his B.S. in Environmental Engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Platteville and his M.S. in Environmental Engineering and Science from Iowa. Jeremy is a project leader for Iowa’s ESW chapter and served as president of the Platteville Society of Environmental Engineers. In addition to ESW, Jeremy enjoys kayaking, tubing, golfing, and spending time with family and friends.
Alex is in the position of Director of Communications & Technology. In this capacity, Alex is responsible for the content in the monthly ESW newsletter as well as for the new members forum just launched this fall. He also helps the national team evaluate new technologies needed for their various projects. Alex is also active in helping with some education-related projects.
Alex is the former president of the University of Pittsburgh’s ESW chapter, and has also been the leader of one of its flagship projects. Alex has his B.S. in Engineering Physics from Pitt, and is now working towards his PhD in the Civil Engineering department with Pitt's Sustainability and Green Design group. Outside of ESW, he is involved with Pitt's other environmental groups, the Honors College, and the TEDx project. In between working on random ideas and projects, Alex enjoys video games, cooking, and coming up with new random ideas to work on.
Tim Kendrick is our Director of Outreach, and is responsible primarily for reaching out to new schools to help them found ESW chapters, and for helping new chapters get integrated into the organization.
Tim is currently an undergraduate Mechanical engineering student at Purdue University further pursuing a minor in Electrical and Computer Engineering. He is serving as the current president of the Purdue-ESW Chapter and Chair of the 2010 ESW National Conference to be held at Purdue University in the Fall of 2010. Further, Tim is actively engaged in MEMS/NEMS (Micro/Nano-electromechanical Systems) research at Purdue's Birck Nanotechnology Center. Tim is also a member of the Award-winning Purdue Society of Professional Engineers Rube Goldberg Team for the third consecutive year. He plays in numerous musical groups on the Purdue campus. Between clubs and school work, Tim finds time to enjoy playing Jazz Piano and listening to live jazz, play and watch virtually all sports, especially baseball, soccer and golf, and enjoy travel with friends.
Akta Patel recently received her Bachelor’s of Science degree in Biological and Environmental Engineering from Cornell University. She will be pursuing a Master’s of Engineering degree at Cornell next fall in Civil and Environmental Engineering. Akta has served as the Vice-President of Finance and Membership, Vice-President of Outreach and Education, and Co-President at ESW-Cornell. Akta is also involved with Cornell’s AguaClara sustainable water-supply team. In addition to her love for the environment, Akta enjoys running outdoors, reading, music, and spending time with her friends and family.
In his position as Director of Chapter Relations, Johnny is in charge of connecting student chapter leaders to increase collaboration between/among our chapters, ensure that ESW National is providing value to the local chapters, and provide overall chapter relations support and communications.
By 2011, Johnny will have served two years as president of the University of Texas at Austin’s ESW chapter. He is currently pursuing a B.S. in Chemical Engineering, with emphasis in Environmental Engineering, and a minor in Biology. In the past, he co-chaired the Second Annual Electronic Waste Drive and in the future, he will be playing an integral role in founding the UT Service Scholars Program. When time permits, Johnny enjoys the spoken word, playing basketball, and listening to music.
Ankur is one of two fellows who will be supporting strategic and infrastructure building initiatives for the national office over the summer. He currently works with ESW at Northwestern University's International Projects Team, specifically focusing on the chapter's work in Panama.
Ankur is a rising senior at Northwestern University studying biomedical engineering. He took the last year off from school to work as the Director of Development for GlobeMed (a student-led global health organization). He is from the small town of Menomonie in Wisconsin, loves Taco Bell, and enjoys a competitive game of Super Smash Brothers anytime.
Ren Chung Yu, or RC, is a graduating senior at Northwestern University majoring in Electrical Engineering and Economics, and minoring in Environmental Policy & Culture. At Northwestern, RC has pursued his passion in advancing environmental sustainability. He worked with the NU Solar Car Team and General Motor’s Hybrid group to develop clean energy technologies. He traveled to Vietnam to help a middle-school start a recycling program and spent three months in China studying environmental policy.
Currently, he is leading up the Centennial Solar Panel System, an initiative to install a 16.8 kW solar array on campus. The system will be Northwestern's first on-site renewable energy system. Building on this effort, RC helped form the Campaign for Clean Energy at Northwestern, a coalition between five student environmental groups to pursue more on-site renewable energy in the coming years. He also started an initiative to conduct energy audits of residential buildings on campus.
RC is a one-time busking backpacker and former state gymnast who likes robots, books, and guitars. He cooks a mean sesame peanut noodles and makes a killer banana smoothie.
