Public Education and Community Outreach
Engineers for a Sustainable World (ESW) works to reduce global poverty, both in the field and through public education and outreach. Our public education activities have two primary goals:
- Raising awareness of global issues and human development
- Increasing public awareness about engineering and its role in society
Current Campaigns

Earth Day
ESW members across the country are organizing Earth Day activities to promote global awareness and environmental citizenship. Activities include measuring community members “ecological footprint”, testing local water quality, K-12 outreach on “the world’s thirstiest children”.

Landmine Awareness

Landmine Awareness
Land mines are indiscriminate by nature. They threaten children, livestock, soldiers, and civilians alike. They are designed to maim - not kill - leaving survivors disabled for life. Once deployed, a mine remains active for up to 50 years. With a lifetime of decades, these weapons remain dangerous long after “peace” has been achieved, making reconstruction difficult. Land mines perpetuate the cycle of poverty inherent to so many affected countries by leaving fertile agricultural land unusable. They impede the safe repatriation of refugees as well as the delivery of aid.
For additional information and resources to raise awareness about landmines, please see the Chapter Resource Center
Drive to Not Drive
The world’s growing population is raising the demand for energy. Currently the most common way to satisfy energy needs is the burning of fossil fuels, which produce carbon emissions and affect global climate change. High-income countries, with 15 percent of the world’s population, use approximately half of the world’s energy, and produce more than half of the global carbon dioxide emission. The Drive to Not Drive is a pledge drive challenging our members to NOT drive for as many days as they can in a given month.

Other Initiatives
Chapters across the United States coordinate ongoing public awareness activities, including book clubs, film series, public lecture series, and K-12 outreach. For additional information about local activities, please look for a local chapter in your area through our Chapter Directory.
