1. What information of yours does ESW collect?
Our goal is to support individuals and organizations partnered with ESW by providing the information and services that are most relevant to you. To achieve this goal, ESW must collect information so we can understand what makes you different from other unique members or groups. While you are not required to register for membership with ESW, some services may not function properly or may not be accessible unless you join the organization.
Information collected online is usually defined as being either anonymous or personally identifiable.
Anonymous information refers to data that cannot be tied back to a specific individual. For example, each time a visitor comes to the ESW website, information such as their browser type, computer platform, date and time of the visit, what pages they accessed, ect..., are recorded. This information is considered anonymous because we do not know any personal information about the actual visitor. We use anonymous information to track trends, locate problems, and to help us provide an enjoyable web experience to all our visitors. You do not have to register with the ESW before we can collect this anonymous information.
Personally identifiable information refers to data that tells us specifically who you are, such as your name and postal address, which may be collected in addition to the anonymous data described above. ESW collects personal information in the following ways through its web site:
- Membership Registration: When you register as a member of ESW, you provide ESW with your name, postal address, zip code, email address, telephone number, and other information. While not all of this data is required for our services to function, we are better able to support you if you volunteer complete and accurate information. Users who complete the registration process are given an ESW login and can take full advantage of the services offered by the site. For individuals that choose to register as Full Members, ESW collects your credit card information in connection with your payment for membership. All credit card information is removed from our database upon the process of payment.
- Other Registration: Other registration forms (Non-Governmental Organization, Chapter, etc.) may collect contact information for organizations or individuals. By providing this information, ESW is better able to connect individual volunteers to organizations with similar interests or needs.
- Online Giving: When you contribute to ESW online, you provide your credit card information in connection with your gift. If you choose to make your gift anonymously, your name will not be used by ESW. All other donors will be recognized through newsletters or other publications.
2. How does ESW use the information?
Any personally identifiable information you share with ESW when registering for membership or other registration is maintained and accessible only by ESW unless specifically stated otherwise. ESW requests information from its members so that it can connect students, academia, and professionals to developing communities.
The following are examples of how the ESW may use the information it collects:
- Membership: Members that express interest in serving as advisors, speakers, project consultants, or other volunteer make their contact information available to a sub-set of registered members and chapters. By volunteering your contact information, you are in no way required to help - it merely means that students or chapters could contact you, and if the opportunity they propose interests you and time permits, you could agree to act as a volunteer.
- Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs): Representatives from NGOs may register their interest in partnering with an ESW chapter on a project. By providing your contact information, you allow ESW to contact you to develop project opportunities. You may also choose to make your contact information available to a sub-set of registered members, allowing individual full members and chapters to directly contact you if interested in a partnership.
- Volunteer Applications: If you complete a volunteer application on the ESW site, we will use the information you provided to contact you if a position matches your interests and skills.
- Forms: ESW sometimes uses an individual registered user's data to "pre-populate" online forms that are displayed for the purpose of collecting additional individual data.
- Mailing List & Publications: Full Members of ESW will receive newsletters about ESW and if you indicate that you were interested in being added to our mailing list, you will receive emails.
3. With whom does ESW share the information that is collected?
By providing ESW with your personally identifiable information and expressing interest in volunteering with the organization, you may allow a sub-set of registered users to access your information. As individual members, chapters may access your information if you are interested in serving as an advisor or other mentor. As an NGO contact, information will be shared with full members and chapters only if you choose to make this information available.
4. How can you access or edit your information?
If you are a registered member at ESW you can access and edit your personal information at any time. Login to the Members section of this website to obtain details on how to edit your personal information.
5. What are "cookies" and how does ESW use them?
A cookie is a small text file containing a unique identification number that is transferred from a website to the hard drive of your computer so that the site may identify your computer and passively track its activities on the website. This unique number identifies your web browser to our computer system whenever you visit ESW. A cookie will not allow a web site to learn any personally identifiable information (such as your real name and address) that you have not otherwise disclosed.
ESW uses cookies to achieve the following:
- Track anonymous information as described in the Question 1 of our privacy policy.
- Create a secure login section of our website that requires a visitor to provide a valid login and password before gaining access to restricted areas and information.
