Project Information for Campus Chapters
Starting a Campus-Based Project
Starting a chapter project is one way to engage students on your campus in using their engineering skills to make a positive difference in the world. ESW also recommends that all campus chapters put as much energy into raising awareness about the challenges of doing sustainable development as they put into coordinating projects. For more information about how you can educate your members, please see the public outreach section of our website.
Campus projects should be integrated into the engineering curriculum at either the undergraduate or graduate level. This is to ensure that the project is technically rigorous, that the project team is accountable to their partners, and that faculty oversight is in place for the project. ALL project teams must have a Project Supervisor who is a practicing engineer or faculty member.
Guidelines for starting a chapter project, recommendations for identifying potential partners, and access to the ESW Partner database are available in the Chapter Resource Center, accessible to registered chapters of ESW. All chapters must submit a formal proposal to start a project or conduct a project scoping trip. Please see the proposal deadlines below.
Benefits of ESW Project Review
ESW project review ensures that all projects coordinated under the auspices of Engineers for a Sustainable World reflect the vision, mission, and values of this amazing organization. In addition, the review process offers chapters:
- Professional guidance from our Project Advisory Committee (PAC) members, who are experts in the fields of engineering and international development. Many serve as consultants to large NGOs and government agencies, and can make recommendations in how to improve the success of your project and identify in-country contacts.
- Visibility through ESW’s communication channels and through national media. Projects are posted on the ESW website and may be included in publications such as our Annual Report and donor newsletters. ESW has been featured in many local and national publications, such as The Chronicle of Higher Education, San Francisco Chronicle, ASEE’s Prism Magazine, and SWE Magazine.
- Ability to fundraise through ESW through our website and by soliciting pledges. All contributions to ESW are tax deductible. Through the secure server on our website, donors may make gifts online.
- Funding sources may be recommended in the review process. The PAC has experience with a broad range of agencies and organizations which may provide funding.
Only proposals from registered ESW chapters will be reviewed by the Project Advisory Committee.
